Description

Prof. Mark Ashton is a highly respected Clinical Professor of Surgery and Honorary Professor of Anatomy at the University of Melbourne, and currently holds the position of Chair of Plastic Surgery at Epworth Freemasons Hospital. His leadership experience includes serving as Head of Plastic Surgery at The Royal Melbourne Hospital from 2001 to 2016 and at the Royal Women’s Hospital from 2000 to 2016. He also served as President of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons between 2017 and 2019.

He represents the specialty of Plastic Surgery as the Elected Councillor to the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and remains actively involved on the Board of Training and Council for the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons, the New Zealand Society of Plastic Surgeons, and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Mark also contributes to public health governance as a member of the Perioperative Expert Advisory Board for Safer Care Victoria, advising the Victorian Government on surgical safety and health policy.

In academia and publishing, Mark is the Co-Editor in Chief of the Australasian Journal of Plastic Surgery and serves as an Invited Editor for the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal in the United States. He is an invited Faculty Member of the International Perforator Flap Course in Belgium and chairs the Melbourne Advanced Facial Anatomy Course. He is also a long-standing participant in major international forums, including the London Breast Meeting and Stockholm Breast Meetings.

Mark leads the Taylor Research Laboratory within the University of Melbourne’s Department of Anatomy. He has previously held senior roles with Interplast, a not-for-profit organisation providing plastic and reconstructive surgery to communities across the Asia Pacific. His academic output includes eleven book chapters and more than 200 peer-reviewed publications in respected national and international plastic surgery journals.
